The story follows (Ram), played by Kamal Haasan, a reformed playboy whose marriage to Mythili (Simran) is strained by her constant suspicion of his past. After a misunderstanding leads to their separation, Ram’s four best friends— Ayyappan Nair (Jayaram), Hegde (Ramesh Aravind), Hanumanth (Sriman), and Vedham (Yugi Sethu)—try to cheer him up with a trip to Bangalore.

Unlike your average masala film, Panchathanthiram deals with a universal theme: the fear of getting caught in a lie. Every husband and wife can see a bit of themselves in the film. The dialogues by Kamal Haasan (who also wrote the screenplay) are razor sharp.
