Bangladesh has seen a boom in "short-stay" hotels and guesthouses targeting young couples. In a society where pre-marital dating is still stigmatized, these hotels operate in a legal gray zone. Unscrupulous owners or former employees have been caught installing pinhole cameras in smoke detectors, USB chargers, or air conditioning vents. Footage is then compiled and sold to adult sites or shared via encrypted peer-to-peer networks. A major bust in 2023 in the capital’s Banani area revealed a network that had been streaming live feeds from 12 such hotels for over two years.

The hidden cam scandal in Bangladesh gained widespread attention in 2019, when a young couple's private video was recorded and shared on social media without their consent. The video, which showed the couple in a compromising position, quickly went viral, and the couple faced severe backlash from their community and social media users.
