Why? Because the default Android text engine caused conflicts with high-definition texture packs. If you tried to install a high-res UI or PS2-styled fonts without the modified Americangxt , the game would crash, or the text would render as scrambled boxes.
Download the modded version and paste it into the same /text/ directory, overwriting the existing one if prompted.
