The movie takes place five years after the events of the first film. The world is still recovering from the damage caused by the Kaiju attacks, and the Jaeger program, a defense initiative that uses giant humanoid robots called Jaegers to fight the monsters, is facing financial difficulties. Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam), the protagonist, and his co-pilot Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) are tasked with leading a team of Jaeger pilots to fight against a new threat: a group of rogue Jaegers controlled by a mysterious hacker known as Leonardo Ikutab (Lana Condor).
