The first drumbeat snapped the autumn air like a starting pistol. Leaves skittered across the stadium parking lot as students and parents funneled through the gates, breath forming pale clouds in the evening chill. At the far end of the lot, beneath strings of orange safety lights, the Westfield High Marching Lions gathered in a cramped cluster—mismatched jackets, instrument cases, and nervous energy tied together by the same bright-eyed hunger.
