The film revolves around Richie Rich (Macaulay Culkin), a kind and gentle 12-year-old boy who lives with his parents, Richard and Regina Rich (James Tolkan and Megan Cavanagh), and their loyal butler, Lawrence (Jonathan Hyde). As the son of a wealthy businessman, Richie has every luxury imaginable, but he longs for a normal life with friends and a sense of belonging. When his parents are kidnapped by the evil Mr. Brown (John Castle), Richie must use his resourcefulness and ingenuity to rescue them.

The story follows Richie as he tries to be a normal kid, eventually befriending a group of sandlot children. The plot thickens when a greedy corporate executive, Laurence Van Dough, plots to steal the family fortune by disposing of Richie’s parents, Richard and Martha Rich. With the help of his loyal butler, Herbert Cadbury, and his new friends, Richie must use his family's high-tech gadgets to foil Van Dough’s scheme and save his parents.
