The roots of Sonnenfreunde are entwined with the Lebensreform (Life Reform) movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This social movement reacted against the rapid industrialization and perceived artificiality of urban life. Proponents argued that modern society had become detached from nature, leading to "civilization sickness." Sonnenfreunde became a medium to advocate for a "natural" state of being.
